What exactly is a subdomain?

A subdomain is a label placed before a root domain, separated by a dot. In myproject.is-pro.dev, the word myproject is the subdomain. You choose that part; we own and manage the root domain.

Subdomains work just like full domain names for most purposes — you can point them at a web server, a CDN, an API, or an email provider using DNS records. They're widely used to separate services (e.g., api.example.com vs docs.example.com) or to give individuals a unique address under a shared domain.

With is-cool-me, you can sign in with GitHub, choose a supported zone, register a subdomain, and then keep managing its DNS records from the dashboard whenever your project changes.

Supported DNS record types

Type Purpose Common use
A Maps to an IPv4 address VPS, dedicated server
AAAA Maps to an IPv6 address IPv6-enabled servers
CNAME Alias to another hostname Vercel, Netlify, GitHub Pages
TXT Arbitrary text data Verification, SPF records
MX Mail server routing Custom email for your subdomain
CAA Certificate authority policy Restrict who can issue SSL certificates
SRV Service discovery routing Game servers, VoIP, and other service endpoints
PTR Reverse DNS mapping Advanced infrastructure and reverse lookups

The dashboard supports A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, CAA, SRV, and PTR records. Compatible records can also enable Cloudflare proxying.

Naming rules

Your subdomain label must follow standard DNS naming conventions:

  • Only lowercase letters (a–z), digits (0–9), and hyphens (-) are allowed.
  • Cannot start or end with a hyphen.
  • Maximum 63 characters per label.
  • Must be unique within the chosen zone.

Safety: Found phishing, malware, impersonation, or spam on a subdomain? Submit a public abuse report at dash.is-pro.dev/report.
